Why do some nibs have breather holes and others don’t? The vent hole, or breather hole, is the space that allows for air exchange as ink flows out of the filling system. It may be that this is actually unnecessary, and the hole acts as a stopper for cracks, as many nibs are also available without vent holes and function well.

Extraordinary Pens – MacKinnon Fluid Pencil

This is an 1880 MacKinnon “Fluid Pencil” eyedropper-fill stylographic pen in Black Chased Hard Rubber with (2) gold-filled repousse bands and repousse cap. Douglas MacKinnon is recognized as the inventor of the stylographic fountain pen (more here, thanks to George Kavalenko). How do I know if an ink is saturated? Sometimes, you can tell because there is a rich sheen that crusts on the mouth of the bottle, or there are particles at the bottom of the bottle. Most likely, you’ll know in use because the color will be very rich.

Extraordinary Pens – Moore Trench Pen

This is a 1915 Moore Trench Pen model 62/6.00 Safety eyedropper-fill in Black Chased Hard Rubber. Cap imprinted “THE INK TAB” with patent dates. Barrel with normal Moore imprints. Cap-top unscrews to access ink pellet storage. Pellets are dropped into the barrel and water is added to make ink, which eliminated the need for soldiers in the trenches to carry ink in glass bottles. Pelikan 100N Magnum Emege

This is a 1935 Pelikan 100N Magnum Emege PIF in Tortoise with Red Hard Rubber cap, inner cap and turning knob, and gold trim. Pelikan’s only oversize vintage pen, explaining its high demand among Pelikan collectors. The inner-cap imprinted “Emege,” representing Pelikan’s licensed Portugese distributor, who so signed all the Pelikans he sold, so he didn’t need to repair under warrantee any pens he did not sell. Fine nib. Visualated barrel. Item #21 in Catalog #81.
