Extraordinary Vintage Pens

1
1930 Aurora Duplex Large lever-fill in Jade with Black ends. The “Duplex” was Aurora’s first celluloid pen. A “Duofold” look-a-like, made in the very early years of Aurora, when their design was highly influenced by US pens. In 1927 Aurora introduced the “Duplex” in Red Hard Rubber with black ends. In 1929 the celluloid Duplex was introduced in five versions and five colors. This is one of the rarer models, with its repousse clip having a floral filigree design and three cap bands. Medium, flexible nib. Slightest tinge of ambering, otherwise near mint+.
$2000
2
1945 Colorado Double-barreled, double nibbed PIF in Silver Laminated with “scissor” barrel configuration. NPT. Red dot & white dot on gripping sections so you know which side has which color ink. Incredible pen, almost never found in this condition. Shown open. The scissor “swivel” allows the user to fill each of the two reservoirs separately. Medium nibs. Near mint+ (could be new-old-stock).
$6500
3
1932 Ford “Patent Pen” Large plunger-fill in Red Mottled Hard Rubber. Extremely rare in Black, many, many times rarer in Red Mottled! A highly unusual pen with a unique filling mechanism! The barrel unscrews and removes to access the ink reservoir (which came both amber and clear) with it’s cork gasket. The pen fills on the pull stroke and a sliding seal moves out of the way on the push stroke so the ink doesn’t expel. Shown both closed and open. More information here: http://www.penpractice.com/page10.html. Medium nib, with a tad of flex. In Lambrou’s 1989 book, he mentions that these pens were produced under license for T.B. Ford, Ltd. by the Wyverne Pen Company, a major UK pen manufacturer based in London. Medium, flexible nib. New-old-stock. Mint. The largest model made. You’ll never find a nicer example!
$3500

1914 Montblanc 2F Rouge et Noir Safety eyedropper-fill in Black Hard Rubber. Very early Montblanc, with the red star. Original, signed “Montblanc” accommodation clip. Cap imprint: “Rouge et Noir.” Barrel imprint: “Rouge et Noir” (in a semi circle) [Star Logo] Original Patent Appl.” Nib imprinted: “Simplo 2 14K.” Medium, italic, extra-flexible nib. Some barrel imprint wear, mostly to the star logo, the remainder fully readable. Otherwise near mint. Unrestored.
$2500
5
1936 Montblanc L129 Push knob fill in Black. Yes, a 129, one of the rarest “Holy Grails” of Montblanc. Less than a dozen known to exist (perhaps even less than 10). The two outer cap bands are sterling silver, otherwise GFT. 2-tone, medium nib. Near mint+
$8500
6
1939 Montblanc 139 Meisterstuck PIF in Black Celluloid. Rare, long window with close to perfect pinstriping. GFT with outer cap bands in sterling silver. Double-broad, italic, slightly right oblique, wartime, alloy nib (gold, iridium, ruthenium). Many collectors report that the alloy nibs write even smoother than the gold nibs. Flat feed. Turning mechanism pattern information and knurling is perfect. Near mint.
$3200
7
1930 Omas “Extra” BF in Black with Ivory Veins – absolutely beautiful! Duofold streamlined look-a-like (all the Parker Duofolds being imported into Italy were selling as fast as they could get them, so it’s no surprise that the pens Omas was manufacturing at the time looked like the Duofold). The model was made in three sizes, this being the largest. GFT. “Omas 585 Extra” nib. Fine, triple-flexible nib. Fitted with a silicon sac. Near mint+ (could be new-old-stock).
$3900

1933 Pelikan 110 PIF in White Rolled Gold-filled cap & barrel (very rare). Green celluloid visualated window. Medium/fine nib. Very minor box wear here & there, otherwise new-old-stock, mint in original form fitted box. Photo with packaging.
$2700
12
1931 Pelikan T111 Toledo PIF in 24K gold-plated sleeve with etched pelicans surrounded by fine tooling. This is the original – not one of the modern reproductions! [Martin Lehman, author of the Pelikan book, describes the process of making the binde: the motifs of the body were carved into a relief by using a corrosive method, deep parts were then burnished, distinguished motifs were gold-plated and parts of the line drawings were then re-engraved by hand.] Black hard rubber cap with etched clip (used only on this model) and knurled cap bands (also unique to this model). Amber celluloid barrel. Fine nib. New-old-stock. Mint in original form-fitted box. This pen is thought of as the “holy grail” of vintage Pelikans. Photo with box.
$6500
13
1899 Waterman 222 Taper Cap eyedropper-fill in BHR. Barrel with Sterling Silver “Chased” (Snail) overlay. Cap with 1884 patent dates. Extremely rare and beautiful! Medium, extra-flexible, italic nib. Near mint++.
$1500
14
1905 Waterman 20 eyedropper-fill in Chased Black Hard Rubber. Early, slip-cap model. During the second and third decade of the 1900s, pen companies competed to offer oversized pens. This is a wonderful example of Waterman’s largest pen! also used in association with Waterman’s “World’s Smallest Pen” to attract attention in stores, store window displays, advertisements and Expositions. USA made pen with Canadian made nib (fine, semi-flexible). Has been filled (probably 100+ years ago), otherwise new-old-stock, mint with deep, crisp chasing and imprints. It would be very hard to find a nicer example.
$2300
15
1927 Waterman 7 “Pink Banded” LF in Red Ripple with “Pink” cap band and corresponding nib (fine, triple-flexible). Waterman used a color coding system so buyers could select their style of nib by “color.” It was their answer to Wahl Eversharp’s Personal Point pen. Near mint+.. Still available: A second is available, with a fine, extra-flexible nib, @ $1000.
$1200
16
1917 Waterman (05)42 “Continental Safety” eyedropper-fill in BHR with the famous “Pompeiano” overlay depicting images of 3 different semi-clad Greek Goddesses in Archways. Intricate Floral & Vine cap, cap top and clip design. Looks like “bas relief,” but is really complex guilloche engraving. Cap indicia engraved, “CV.” Double-broad nib. The pen is featured in the Waterman Safety book (the book may be equally rare!). Signs of ink in the barrel and cap, otherwise near mint+. Unrestored.
$3500
17
1932 Aerollo/Dunhill “Two Pen” Matchstick-fill in Black Chased “Spiral” hard Rubber. Clip imprinted “D.D. Zerollo” Nibs each signed “John Dunhill” who had the marketing license for the English speaking market. There was also a marketing agreement in France with the “Unic” Company. This pen was produced in two sizes, which are equally rare – this is the larger of the two. GFT. The cap top unscrews to reveal the matchstick filler. There are two separate reservoirs, one for each of the nibs. Turn the bottom knob to propel one nib, turn in the other direction to propel the other. Medium nibs. Extremely rare! Near mint++. You’ll never find a better example!

Strauss sold tens of millions of dollars of Skyline and Fifth Avenue pen and pencil sets.
