Extraordinary Vintage Pens

Catalog 57 (December 2010)
1
1905 Carey #2 Cone Cap eyedropper-fill in RHR with alternating Pearl and Abalone slab barrel. GFT. Signed “Carey VV” (Von Valkenberg) clip. Fine, extra-flexible nib. Date approximate – the company appeared around 1900. It is believed that almost all Carey sales were in NY, Philly and Boston where their offices were located, making their pens hard to find. This is an outstanding example! Rubber a little darker under the cap. Near mint.
$4500

2
1905 Mabie Todd #2 size Straight-holder eyedropper-fill in Sterling Silver”Hand Hammered & Snail” overlay. Very early model, still with the “Bard” name on the pen. Near mint in original hinged leather velvet lined box, with compartment for instructions and (2) eyedroppers. Fine, flexible nib.
$2800

As far as I know, the only Parker model with a covered taper cap. “Lazy S””fine, flexible nib. A few very minor surface scratches (from being around for over 100 years), otherwise near mint.
$6500

$1450

7
1930 Parker Duofold Special BF in Black with outstanding 18K RG (gold-filled) octagonal overlay. The Duofold “Special” is the length of the Sr. with the girth of the Jr., made for users who found that the Sr. had too much girth for their comfort. Alternating pattern of “Diamonds” and “Fleur de Lis” formed within Barley engine-turning. Medium nib. Very likely one-of-a-kind. Near mint.
$950

8

10
1905 J.G Rider #2 size “Snake” jointless eyedropper-filler in Sterling Silver over BHR with green Emerald eyes. J.G was born in 1869. In 1900 he was a salesman, likely for L.E. Waterman. He patented the jointless eyedropper in 1903 and his famous clip in 1909. He founded his pen company in 1905. The J.G Rider snake, like the snake pens from other top manufacturers, is extremely rare. Fine, flexible nib (two 1mm stress cracks emanating from each side of the vent hole). A little oxidation to the hard rubber, and a few light scuffs to the clear barrel indicia, otherwise near mint.
$16000

11
1900 Waterman (4)22 Taper Cap eyedropper-fill in Fine Silver “Filigree” pattern (.999 silver). Extremely rare to find both a fine silver taper cap, and to find one where the cap is also covered – not just the barrel. Less than a handful are known. Medium, italic nib. Indicia initialed in Olde English script. A few very minor surface scratches (from being around for over 100 years), otherwise near mint.
$5500

1930 Waterman Patrician LF in Moss Agate. GFT. The Patrician was Waterman’s first entry into plastic pens. From 1924 through 1929, competitor’s captured much of Waterman’s market share, as Waterman was trying to earn back their investment in colored rubber (rose ripple; olive ripple; blue-green ripple). Unfortunately, the Patrician didn’t help much, as the depression was in full swing. While Waterman held on, struggling for about another 25 years, they really never did recover and recapture their market share. Medium, flexible, italic nib. Near mint+.
